Preventing violence against health workers

Health workers are at high risk of violence all over the world. According to WHO, between 8% and 38% of health workers suffer physical violence at some point in their careers. Many more are threatened or exposed to verbal aggression. Most violence is perpetrated by patients and visitors. Categories of health workers most at risk include nurses and other staff directly involved in patient care, emergency room staff and paramedics.

Violence against health workers is unacceptable. It has not only a negative impact on the psychological and physical well-being of health-care staff, but also affects their job motivation. As a consequence, this violence compromises the quality of care and puts health-care provision at risk. It also leads to immense financial loss in the health sector.

In my opinion, following measures can mitigate such incidents to some extent:

1. Proper Investigation on the actual incidence of workplace violence in health care settings should be carried out and offenders must be held accountable for their actions.

2. Effective communication should be fostered among HCWs and Patient party regarding the complexity of cases and further risks associated with it.

3. Hospitals should limit working hours and manage the required number of HCWs to look after patients properly. Violence prevention education should be included as part of medical school coursework.

4. Health care settings should collaborate and maintain partnership with law enforcement agencies, civil societies and local organizations to prevent such incidents.

5. Shortcomings of Health care settings like HCWs availability, lack of equipment and unmanageable cases should be properly reported to patient party.

6. Hospitals and Health care settings should have a process in place to expedite the response when violent act is reported.

7. Virtual patient observation (monitoring multiple patients without physical presence) should be used where necessary. Genuine requests from patient party should be listened and addressed as far as possible.

8. Provision of safe rooms in hospitals should be made. Violence prevention organizational policies and procedures and immediate response teams should be formulated in Health care settings.

9. Zero tolerance policy should be established and every act of violence against HCWs in the workplace should be reported so that appropriate measures can be taken.

10. Educating and making people aware that violence against HCWs is intolerable and actionable is the most important aspect. Support of Medias, local governments, youth and civil societies to Health care settings and HCWs is crucial to eliminate this culture of violence.
